Name - George Thompson
Job Title - Crane Operator
When did you start with Windhoist?
January 2019 on the Hornsea 1 project.
Why did you want to work within the wind industry?
Having been a crane operator for 13 years I had worked on a few preassembly jobs and enjoyed the challenge and coordination that comes with the wind industry. Working on wind farms is different to normal crane hire, it is hard work. I do not like to be dormant; I like having a plan, thinking on my feet if needed and challenging myself to keep life interesting.
What is your favourite part of the job?
Being part of the Renewables future. Helping future generations getting cleaner energy whilst seeing new locations and new people each time.
Biggest career highlight?
Getting to Supervise on The Cherry Tree Wind Farm. Going to Australia for the first time and working with some of the best Operators, Technicians, Riggers and Managers I have met to date.
Most challenging part of your job?
The strength needed to be away from my family. I am a family person and miss my wife and kids dearly when I am away. As anyone who is in this industry knows it takes a lot of mental strength to be away from those you love.
